Greenhill Wines Cellar Door, Café and Winery are collocated in the vineyard at 1016 Greenhill Road, Summertown, South Australia. The Cellar Door and Café occupy a carefully restored and extended 1880s settlers cottage, which opened for business in July 2017. Penny’s and Paul’s concept was beautifully designed by Terence Feltus Architect and Padraic Conneely Builders provided excellent craftsmanship to restore the old stone cottage adding a cellar door and kitchen. The complex is situated on a ridge and has a large deck and grassed area that faces south with a stunning panoramic view of the Piccadilly Valley and vineyards, eucalypt forested Mt Bonython and distant Mt George range.
Wine flights are available throughout the day and Paul is often present to provide wine flights, which can be accompanied by light food. A charge of $10 per person is redeemable on the purchase of at least 2 bottles of wine. During the Covid19 period all tastings are made seated and space is limited due to social distancing rules so a booking is recommended. Depending on availability wines can include bottle fermented sparkling rosé, two whites, Grüner Veltliner and Chardonnay, and three reds, Pinot Noir, Merlot and Cabernet.
Wine can be purchased by the glass or bottle for consumption in the cellar door or in the café along with Mediterranean-style food. Light food is available all day, including tea, coffee and sweets and the tasting plates and little plates are served from lunch to close.
The food served at the café showcases local fruit and vegetables, pasta, and Penny’s bread, baked daily. The menu features the Greenhill Wines Café tasting plate, which typically features three dishes freshly prepared and designed to complement each other, with ciabatta. Little plates, including cheese and salami platters are also available. At the weekend small bites such as a variety of bruschetta’s and homemade grissini can be ordered with wine tasting.
There is also a small selection of sweets to go with espresso coffee or tea.
The menu changes frequently, so be sure to phone ahead for groups of 6 or over, and any special dietary requirements.
